The Truman Balcony

President Harry Truman ordered the construction of this porch off of the Yellow Oval Room in 1947. The decision to add the porch was controversial, but now it is agreed that the balcony adds to the overall appearance and balance of the structure. However, while it was being built, the structural engineers examining the White House discovered the building was unsound, thus beginning the Truman reconstruction project that lasted from 1948 to 1952.
