Anita McBride, Chief of Staff to First Lady Laura Bush, talks about former First Families returning to the White House to visit
The President and Mrs. Bush enjoy being able to share the White House with its previous occupants. Anita McBride, Chief of Staff to the First Lady, describes past visits from Nancy Reagan, Lady Bird Johnson, and Jack Ford. During Mrs. Reagan’s visit, she stayed in the Queen’s Bedroom where Ms. McBride visited her personally. Lady Bird Johnson’s visit included a poignant moment when she saw her husband’s portrait in the Vermeil and Mrs. Johnson, seated in her wheelchair, “raised her arms as if to embrace her husband."
